Johan Rudolf Bonnet (30 March 1895 – 18 April 1978) was a Dutch artist who lived much of his life in the town of Ubud on Bali, Indonesia. He was known for his contributions to the Balinese art scene and his involvement in the Pita Maha movement.
Bonnet completed a self-portrait in 1927, a year before leaving for the Dutch East Indies.
Bonnet’s artworks have been sold at auctions, and some of his notable pieces include “Wanita Bali” (1951), a pastel on paper, and “Orang Gunung” (1895-1978) His paintings have been highly sought after, and the highest prices have been paid for his works.
Bonnet’s artwork includes portraits, figure paintings, and genre paintings He was deeply influenced by the culture and landscape of Indonesia, where he immersed himself during his time living in Ubud.
Bonnet passed away in Laren, Holland in April 1978 after a long illness. His ashes were brought to Bali, where he had spent a significant part of his life.
